Points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions. The standard single number for team strength.
Formula
net rating = 100 x (points for - points against) / possessionsOffensive rating is points scored per 100 possessions and defensive rating is points allowed per 100. Net rating is the difference. Because it divides by possessions, a slow defensive team and a fast offensive one can be compared directly.
It predicts results better than win-loss record over a short stretch, since it counts how comfortably a team won rather than only whether it did.
The common mistake
Net rating ignores who you played. A team with a soft schedule inflates it, which is what an opponent-adjusted rating such as Elo is for.
