Pace

also: possessions per 48

How many possessions a team plays per 48 minutes. It describes tempo, not quality.

Formula
pace = possessions / minutes played x 48

Pace is possessions scaled to a regulation game, so overtime does not inflate it. A fast team gets more shots for both sides, which raises raw totals without changing efficiency.

That is why totals and player counting stats need a pace adjustment before comparing eras or teams. A bettor reads it the other way: two fast teams point toward a higher game total.

The common mistake

Pace is not a style verdict by itself. A team can be fast because it pushes the ball or because it turns it over and the other side scores quickly.
