Four factors

Shooting, turnovers, rebounding and free throws: the four team numbers that explain most of the difference between winning and losing.

The factors are effective field goal percentage, turnovers per possession, offensive rebound share and free throws per field goal attempt. Each is measured for a team's offense and for its defense, which gives eight numbers per team.

They break a net rating into causes. Two teams with the same margin can get there by shooting well or by taking care of the ball, and the factors show which.

The common mistake

The factors overlap with each other. A team that crashes the offensive glass may give up transition looks, so improving one can cost another.
