Effective FG%

also: eFG% · effective field goal percentage

Field goal percentage with a made three counted as 1.5 makes, so a team that shoots threes is not undersold.

Formula
eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA

Plain field goal percentage treats every make alike, but a three is worth half again as much as a two. A player who goes 4 of 10 on threes scores the same as one who goes 6 of 10 on twos, and eFG% puts those two lines on the same number.

It is one of the four factors, the four team numbers that explain most of the gap between winning and losing. It ignores free throws, which is the job of true shooting.

The common mistake

eFG% says nothing about shot quality. A high number can come from open looks or from a shooter making hard ones. Compare it with expected points per shot to tell which.
