Shot zones
Six areas of the floor, from the restricted area to the free throw line, used to summarize where a player or team shoots.
We split every located shot into restricted area (under 4 feet from the rim), the rest of the paint, midrange, corner three, above-the-break three and free throw. The split matters because the make rates differ sharply: shots at the rim and from the corner are the efficient ones.
A shot profile is the share of attempts and the make rate in each zone. It is how a team's style shows up in numbers, and how a defense is described by what it allows rather than what it blocks.
Zone make rates on a handful of shots are noise. Check the attempt count before reading a hot corner or a cold midrange.
